Importance of Hazardous Waste Safety Training in the Workplace

Hazardous waste work, from cleanup at contaminated sites to treatment, storage and disposal operations and emergency response to chemical releases, exposes workers to chemicals they can’t always see or smell. OSHA’s Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response standard (HAZWOPER, 29 CFR 1910.120) sets training requirements based on each worker’s role, including 40 hours of initial training for general site workers and 8 hours of refresher training every year. Our HAZWOPER 40-Hour Training Package provides the classroom portion of initial training, and the 8-Hour Annual Retraining Package covers the yearly refresher.

Emergency responders are trained by level, with the Awareness, Operations and HAZMAT Technician packages, and the All 23 HAZWOPER Training Programs package covers everything. Individual topics include decontamination, the site safety and health plan and spill cleanup. Beyond HAZWOPER, Universal Waste explains how to handle and dispose of batteries, lamps and similar materials under the EPA’s Universal Waste Regulation, and Hazardous Materials Labeling: DOT and Hazardous Waste Labels covers DOT and EPA labeling requirements. See every HAZWOPER training video on our HAZWOPER safety training page.

All HAZWOPER training videos and Universal Waste are available in English and Spanish, and the hazardous materials labeling courses are in English. Deliver the training through Unlimited Interactive Online Training with completion certificates for your records, run it in a classroom with Classroom / Trainer Delivery, or order safety DVDs and USBs. Hands-on field experience must still be provided on site.
