Importance of Lock-Out/Tag-Out Safety Training in the Workplace

Machines and equipment that start up unexpectedly, or release stored electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic or mechanical energy during servicing, cause some of the most severe injuries in industry: amputations, crushing injuries and electrocution. OSHA’s control of hazardous energy standard (29 CFR 1910.147) requires a written lockout/tagout program and training so that authorized employees can isolate energy safely and affected employees understand why they must never remove a lock or tag.

Our Lock-Out/Tag-Out training video gives employees the information they need to avoid energy-related hazards while equipment is being serviced, and helps employers meet OSHA’s training requirements. Electrical isolation is covered in depth by Electrocution Hazards Part I: Worksite Safety, while Electrocution Hazards Part II: Employer Responsibilities addresses what supervisors and employers must put in place. LOTO training is most effective alongside machine guarding safety courses and our broader electrical safety training, and it belongs in every program on our industrial safety training page.

All lockout/tagout training videos are available in English and Spanish. Use Unlimited Interactive Online Training to document training for authorized and affected employees, run refresher sessions with Classroom / Trainer Delivery, or keep safety DVDs and USBs in the maintenance shop.
