Importance of Confined Space Safety Training in the Workplace

Tanks, vaults, pits, silos and manholes can hold oxygen-deficient or toxic atmospheres, engulfment hazards and moving equipment, and many confined space fatalities are would-be rescuers who entered without protection. OSHA’s permit-required confined spaces standard (29 CFR 1910.146, and 29 CFR 1926 Subpart AA for construction) requires employers to identify these spaces, control entry with permits and train entrants, attendants and supervisors in their duties.

Confined Space Entry: Preparing for Entry explains what permit-required confined spaces are, the hazards they can hold and how entry permits and written programs prepare workers for entry, and Confined Space Entry: Entering the Space covers safe entry practices and the role of each person on the entry team. Isolating energy before entry is critical, so add lockout/tagout training, and make sure entrants understand respirators and other personal protective equipment.
